Why was my input rejected over one character?
Base58 is case-sensitive and excludes 0, O, I, and l. A lookalike character pasted in place of the real one is reported rather than corrected, because correcting it would change the bytes.
What do the leading 1 characters mean?
Each leading 1 stands for one leading zero byte. They are preserved on the way back, so "11" decodes to two zero bytes rather than to nothing.
My value will not decode to text. Is it broken?
Probably not. Most Base58 values are keys or hashes rather than sentences, so their bytes are not valid UTF-8. Decode to hex instead to see them.
