File signature inspector

Choose or drop one file. Detection is based on its bytes, not its name.

Frequently asked questions

Which file formats does this Tool recognize?

PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, SVG, AVIF, BMP, ICO, PDF, PE/EXE, ZIP, DOCX, XLSX, JAR, APK, MP3, WAV, MP4, GZIP, RAR, and 7z, identified from the File signature rather than the filename.

How does the Tool tell DOCX, XLSX, JAR, and APK apart from a plain ZIP?

All four are ZIP containers. The Tool reads the central directory and looks for exact entry names, such as word/document.xml for DOCX or AndroidManifest.xml for APK, and reports the result as a Container subtype like "Likely DOCX" rather than a certainty.

What does a mismatched extension mean?

It means the Declared extension on the filename does not agree with the File signature found in the bytes, such as a PNG signature on a file named .jpg. Extension agreement never confirms that a file is complete, valid, or safe to open.
