What is a CRC checksum?
CRC stands for Cyclic Redundancy Check. A CRC checksum is a short value calculated from the bytes of text or a file. It helps detect accidental changes, such as corruption during storage or transfer.
To check a file, calculate its checksum and compare it with the expected checksum supplied with the original. Both values must use the same CRC variant. A mismatch means the bytes differ, or the calculation settings differ. A match suggests the data is unchanged, but is not a guarantee: different inputs can produce the same checksum.
CRC32 produces a 32-bit checksum, displayed here as eight hexadecimal characters. This Tool uses CRC-32/ISO-HDLC, the variant used by gzip and zlib.
CRC is not encryption and does not prove who created or sent a file. It is designed to detect accidental corruption, not deliberate tampering.
For example, Text 123456789 gives cbf43926. Adding whitespace or a newline changes the bytes and may change the checksum. Files with identical bytes have the same checksum even if their filenames differ.
Frequently asked questions
How does CRC32 differ from a cryptographic hash?
CRC32 detects accidental changes but is not designed to resist deliberate collisions. A cryptographic hash such as SHA-256 offers stronger collision resistance, though a trusted source is still needed to establish authenticity.
Is CRC32 the same as CRC32C?
No. CRC32C uses a different polynomial and usually gives a different checksum. This Tool uses CRC-32/ISO-HDLC, the variant used by gzip and zlib.
Which bytes are checked?
Text is encoded as UTF-8 exactly as entered, including whitespace, a BOM, and NUL. Files use their exact bytes; their names and media types do not affect the checksum.
Can I check an empty Message?
Yes. Empty Text and an empty file both have the CRC32 checksum 00000000.
What is the file limit?
One file up to 100 MB can be processed at a time. The Tool reads it in small chunks in your browser and does not upload it.
Does the Tool inspect archives?
No. It does not unpack an archive or verify a CRC stored inside it. Selecting an archive calculates CRC32 over the archive file bytes.
