MD5 and SHA-1 can detect accidental corruption but must not be relied on against a deliberate attacker.

Frequently asked questions

Why is a SHA-512 digest so long?

SHA-512 produces 512 bits, rendered as 128 hexadecimal characters. It is a SHA-2 algorithm used in download and ISO checksum lists; the digest length does not depend on the file size.

Is this the same as SHA-512 password hashing?

No. A raw SHA-512 digest is a fast, unsalted hash. Password schemes such as sha512crypt add a salt and repeated work; this Tool does not implement those schemes and is not a password storage tool.

How do I compare a SHA-512 file checksum?

Choose, drop, or paste a file up to 100 MB, then paste the publisher’s expected digest into Compare a checksum. A matching result names SHA-512. Obtain that expected digest from a trusted source.
